Working through lulls in the writing process

There are times when writers seem to be able to produce massive amounts of work and pieces seem to take on a life of their own. There are also times when the inspiration just will not come and writing seems to be an incredible chore.

Every writer has encountered these lulls in the writing process. No matter how gifted or how well known a writer may be, they encounter times when writing is more of a chore than a joy. So when these times come be encouraged because every writer goes through these spells. What can writers do to get through these slow times? How can writers work through the lulls in the writing process?

Be Committed

Writing is at times nothing more than determination and hard work. Never give up on writing because it gets tough. Waiting for inspiration to come is the wrong approach. Make time to write each and every day, even if for a few minutes. Developing writing habits also helps the creative process and stimulates inspiration. Remember commitment is the key to writing success. Nothing of lasting value ever happens without a strong personal commitment.

Develop a Process that Works

Sometimes writers must make their own inspiration through a dedicated process and determination to write. Make sure that the process works with your schedule and your personal goals and desires. Here are some simple tips for making the process work.

* Organize writing time

Organization is a huge asset when trying to overcome a down period when writing. Organization helps creativity and productivity by allowing the writer to keep ideas and previous writing on hand when needed.

* Set a Specific time to write

Sometimes it helps to have a dedicated time that is set aside for writing. Make a time that can easily be followed at least four or five days a week that can be used for writing. Early morning or late evening seems to work best because of fewer distractions.

* Avoid distractions

Avoid as many distractions as possible when writing. Distractions tend to draw writers away from their work and cause them to lose the creative flow sometimes needed to create.

Always have Ideas Ready

One of the most difficult concepts with writing is the starting idea. Remember ideas are all around us and keeping those ideas when they strike is essential for working through lulls. One of the best ways to avoid or overcome writing lulls is to create an ongoing folder of ideas. The folder may contain clippings from newspapers, magazines, or even segments of books that can be used to spur on ideas. There always seem to be ideas that come during times of writing that do not relate to the current project or article. Simply jot the basic idea down and write enough to remember the idea later.

Following a few simple steps can greatly assist writers while they work through times when the creativity simple does not flow or when the work does not go as well as desired. Remember that writing is hard work and often takes a great deal of determination to push through slow times. Develop a process that works with you, not against you. Take time to create an idea folder to be prepared for down times. Doing these things can diminish the down time and get writers back into a high drive of productivity.
