The writer's office: What you really need

Freelance writing can be one of the most affordable businesses to start. There are few startup costs and keeping costs low is relatively easy. One of the struggles for writers is setting up their office. However, starting out as a writer there are few basic things that are needed.

A Specific Place to Write

Creating a dedicated place to work on writing can be a challenge for some. The good news is that the writing space does not have to be large and it does not have to be solely dedicated to writing. Be sure to create a space where the work of writing can be easily conducted and work can be accomplished. Remember the goal of writing is to write. Find a space where writing can take place.

Personal Computer

Before beginning as a writer one essential need is a quality personal computer. Most writing takes place with a computer and few if any writers actually still use a typewriter. The personal computer has replaced the typewriter and can be used for a number of additional functions. Be sure to have a computer that can handle both word processing features and internet capability. With the advent of the internet, computers are even more essential for the writer because much of the work can be done online.

Be smart when looking at computers. There is nothing wrong with purchasing a quality used computer. Sometimes this can be the best possible buy. Take advantage of used computers because most can perform all of the essential functions needed by a writer. Understand what the model can do before making the purchase.

Word Processing Software

Invest in a good word processing software. Many times this is included with the computer. However, there are several less popular word processing software programs that are now standard on many new computers. Know the software before making the purchase and be sure to have a package that is standard for most users. Buying a word processing software that is not compatible with the majority of people is a waste of money.

Printer

Another essential tool is a good printer. Being able to print out articles, query letters and proposals is a must. Again, buy what is affordable. Buying a printer that has all of the extra features is not necessary for a writer. Be sure that the printer can produce a quality product in a effective manner. Nothing fancy is needed because most items are handled over the internet.

Internet Connection

One tool that no writer can afford to be without is an internet connection. The internet has increased the speed and efficiency of writing. Many editors or publishers conduct a large portion of their business via the internet. Finding a quality service that is reliable is essential for freelance writing success.

Be sure to set up an e-mail account that can be used for the business. E-mail is the one of the fastest and easiest ways to communicate with other writers, editors and publishers. Always check to be sure that the editors accept e-mail queries and submission before making the contact.

Basic Office Supplies

The writer will need some basic office supplies such as paper, pens and those kinds of items. These can be purchased from the local office supply store for relatively little. Again, the key is basics. There is little need for high priced stationery, three color business cards or even expensive equipment.

The writers office can be as complex or as simple as desired. The key is make sure that the office functions and works for what is needed. Making the office a place where it is desirable to write, create and be inspired can be another process. The goal is to create the kind of space where writing can easily take place.
