Internet and its effects on education

Since the introduction of the Internet and the accessibility to the World Wide Web, education has evolved from textbook flipping to enriching multimedia presentations. The computer facilitates seamless flow of facts in a fraction of the time a teacher does, demonstrated in a more appealing way. Vast resources can be accessed and downloaded in just a few seconds, saving time, money, energy and it certainly blows your mind when you stop scrolling and think about it.

The Internet provides access to the World Wide Web which in turn offers passage to a multitude of interactive facilities. The process of learning surpasses the traditional classroom environment. The computer can offer multiple dimensions in contrast to just reading. Education can be carried out through audio files or in demonstrative videos. Getting a recipe online can mean a step by step visual guide, reducing the chances of a collapsed souffle. Learning software and interactive graphical user interfaces makes learning fun and interesting in contrast to reading for hours from textbooks that don't even include illustrations. Exploring the human heart through a virtual video is more effective than any medical textbook and certainly eliminates the need of smelling salts and barf bags.

The interconnection of networks provides easy access to information around the globe. Databases of information are linked over vast geographical differences, creating a library of information that can be accessed 24/7. With ever expanding efficiency of search engines, finding a piece of information is as simple as entering a related phrase or key word and clicking enter. Now you can even get suggestions on what you were looking for or related issues on the subject that is in interest. It's practically your personal librarian to the largest library of the world. Years of statistical information, experimental studies, published research and a compilations of various data are available at just a click of a mouse.You don't have to worry about paying late fees as information is available to everyone with an extended borrowing period.

However the Internet also holds many distractions in contrast of education. Although most networks offer useful information and materials, advertisers and spyware inevitably get in the way, offering diversions tailor made for you. Proprietary software costs a bundle and those which are free are filled with banners and advertisements, encouraging you to visit their site or purchase their product. Gambling companies, social networks, slanderous websites and the various pop-ups distract the person with their enticing content. Instead of learning, hours are spent playing online games, gambling and browsing illicit sites. Without proper guidance and monitoring, the Internet may corrupt young minds and fuel an improper addiction.

The internet offers an untapped sea of knowledge for people who thirst for it. However it can also be used to delay or even obstruct the discovering progress. The true learning potential that benefits from the Internet can surpass traditional classroom limits. It all boils down to the intention of user. With great bandwidth comes great responsibility.
