After trying Twitter for a few weeks, I came to the realization that Twitter could easily replace blogging. Heck, we're Americans. We have the shortest attention spans in the world.
When we text on our cell phones we have a maximum of 160 characters. When we Twitter we have 140. Is that enough to get our point across? Surely we can communicate what we need to in that amount of characters. Can't we? If not we can just as easily send two Tweets, one right after the other.
In most cases I would think so. We can add a link to a web site in our tweet and if we chose our words wisely, we could convey a lot of information and feeling into that short text. If not in the actual text, then surely the web site we have linked can get our message across.
As for having the shortest attention spans in the world, we want our news and information fast. We want to read something then move onto the next item, we are always on the move. We want information, all the time. With Twitter it is like a buffet of information. We take what we want and skip over what we don't. Even if we change our mind and realize we did want to check something we skipped over, we can, because it is still on our page.
Quite a few Twitterers have an ideology. Finding something you are interested in and would like to follow and chime in with your own opinion is very easy. Just open an account, it is free and painless. Immediately after you open an account and verify that it belongs to you through your email, you can begin blogging, it is that easy. You will also be surprised at how fast you attract followers. Just write anything in the text box and wait. Followers will pop up in a day or two. If you write something political or controversial, you will have followers quicker.
If you would rather see how it all works before you tweet, just search 'find people' and you are off. You can upload a picture if you want, but that is optional, it is all up to you.
It makes sense to cut our blogs down to easily digestible bites. That way we aren't overloaded with the extra hundred dollar words some people seem to need to use in their blogs to make them feel self important. Twitter is catching on more each day. Even my local news station uses it and has commuters tweet in about traffic and weather. It is a great too for blogging and communication.
