How to relax and be stress-free

Let's face it, stress is taking over our lives. We are constantly rushing from one place to the next, and sitting in backed up traffic while we do it. We're late for work, late for the doctor's office, and late putting dinner on the table. Stress is affecting our families and our lives from sun up until sun down. But what can we do about it?

First things first. We must identify the stressor(s) in our lives. Is it the job? Is it the kids? (Be honest!) Is it money? There is usually more than one; but if we can identify the major stressor, and reduce it, we can begin to take control of our lives again.

If several people got together and answered the previous questions, many of the responses would be very similar. All of us deal with money issues, childcare costs, overdue rent, and cars that won't start. Believe me, I can relate. But with all of that and more going on in our lives, it is crucial that we find realistic ways to reduce the stress and anxiety. So the question becomes: How do we relax?

For some people, a more serious approach is needed. If your job is the primary source of your stress, you may need to consider changing jobs or making adjustments to your current one. Ask yourself if decreasing your hours is possible. If you have a long commute, consider finding a similar job closer to home.

Relationships can also be a big source of stress. Is a partner cheating? Is someone not bringing home the bacon? Are you a "clean freak" and your partner isn't? Take the time to consider the pros and cons of all of your relationships, including your friendships. Consider if someone around you is draining your life force. Don't laugh, it happens. People, even great friends, can cause an inordinate amount of stress or drama in your life. You have to determine if the person is more important than the problems.

There are many different ways to relax. You can get a massage. You can take the family to a nice restaurant, or go to the movies or theater. The zoo or theme park might even be a nice idea. But, if part of your stress is related to money, those might not be the best choices for you or your family.

There are several free or inexpensive options available for a day of stress-relieving fun. One of the easiest, and most convenient, options is a neighborhood walk or bike ride. How about a day at the park? Most cities have a few public parks that offer a variety of summer time events, including movies or concerts in the Park.

Another great stress reliever is an old fashioned picnic. It doesn't matter if you make sandwiches, or pick up something in the drive-thru. The important thing is that you get out of the house, and start enjoying the fresh air. And let's not forget that weekend camping trip. Don't want to deal with traffic? Consider having an outdoor picnic, or camping out, at home.

Yes, it is very possible to reduce stress while at home. Turn off the electronics, and pull out the dusty board game or deck of cards. These can provide hours of laughter and fun while melting the stress away. If quiet time is what you need, pick up that book you've been meaning to read or take a long relaxing bath. Find a friend or family member to take the kids for a couple of hours. Doing this will give you some much needed time to regroup.

It doesn't matter what you do to decrease your stress, as long as you do something. Be sure to take just a little time everyday to stop, breathe, and relax. Your family and friends will thank you for it.
