A guide to the Virginia Beach Farmers Market

For thirty years Virginia-area producers, growers, and various merchants have been selling their goods at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market. The market, at the corner of Dam Neck and Princess Anne Roads, is open for business all year-round in an open-air setting.

Compared to larger, and perhaps more famous farmers markets in New York City and in Seattle, the Virginia Beach market is extremely small. The size of the market, however, doesn't compromise on the variety of goods, or the quality of goods.

Typical of most markets, you'll find the usual selections of farm fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dry goods, baked goods, sweet treats, and various locally produced items. Sampling is generally allowed but only if you seriously intend to buy something. Some vendors work on select weekdays, but on Saturday, the busiest day at the market, all vendors are present and actively selling.

If you prefer to sit and have a meal, head over to the Princess Anne County Grill. What they serve is country cooking like what grandma used to make - dishes like meatloaf, crab cakes, potato salad, and hearty soups. Portions are hefty!

Besides edibles at the market, you'll find cut flowers courtesy of Chapman's Flowers. The Nesting Box is a unique store suited for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. This wildlife store stocks everything from birdseeds to birdhouses, and more.

The Virginia Garden Organic Grocery (which is somewhat expensive) carries a great selection holistic, organic, gourmet, and eco-friendly products for the home and personal use. Amish Farmers supply this grocer with free-range chickens. At The Garden Box, customers can purchase horticultural and outdoor living products. And perhaps the most recognized vendor at the market is Uncle Chuck who sells manta ray and other exotic seafood from the back of his food truck.

Opening day for special events at the market begins mid-March and continues through to December with a season ending holiday open house and of course, a visit from Santa. Family Fun Day in July has great activities for the kids. Such activities include carnival games, bubble gum blowing contests, arts and crafts projects, and pony rides. Adults get the chance to mix and mingle with neighbors and old friends.

In August, the Watermelon Festival always provides more excitement than in the year previous and much more participants. The main attractions at this festival are the Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest and the Watermelon Rolling Contest.
