learning experience, is a teacher who can provide external regulation that will enable him to stop and think before acting. While every child is different, most who struggle with moderately high levels of distractibility and hyperactivity will benefit by at least some of these specific accommodations and modifications designed to engage him in the learning process.
1. Seat him away from windows and doors to minimize outside distractions that will pull him off task.
2. Experiment to find the optimal seating arrangement by considering one of the following. Either seat him at a desk at the front of the class so that he is not distracted by those around him, or in a workstation that is somewhat removed from others. Although some students are sensitive about being treated differently most will appreciate your efforts to minimize distractions.
3. Consider breaking up verbal instruction with activities designed to provide kinesthetic learning experiences.
4. Visit the child's desk frequently as you pass around the room. A light touch on the shoulder will help the child's brain stay engaged in his learning environment.
5. Either provide extra opportunities for the child to stand and move around the room, or involve the entire classroom in physical exercises designed to help the fidgety student. Having students stand and stretch or even walk once around the room can help curtail signs of restlessness from inactivity.
6. Consider supplying the student with headphones to minimize distractions while he works independently on assignments at his desk and during testing times.
7. Provide him with a stress ball and allow him to use it when he is feeling fidgety.
8. Arrange for a private signal that can pass between you and your student to let him know that he needs to refocus. This can be a hand signal or a special facial expression. This means of communication minimizes feelings of embarrassment for the child.
9. Involve the student in learning experiences that allow him to be a group leader for various activities. This will allow his thinking brain to talk to his doing brain, and help regulate his behavior.
10. Avoid censure when possible for out of control behaviors provided that they do not infringe upon the rights of others. ADHD students can best self-regulate when encouraged to engage in a behavior that calms them. The well-prepared teacher will have a tool kit equipped with items such as play
