Have you ever noticed how the biggest drunk in town changes after he sobers up? The process of having a spiritual awakening can begin in a moment but lasts for the rest of your life.
Certain principles for right living are lost on some of society's individuals. The chronic drug abuser or the hopeless alcoholic or the person who hates to think about anything or anyone but himself suffer from a lack of humility. The world they live in may seem unimaginable by you. You may not understand how they can continue on the path of self-destruction. Sometimes, neither can they! There comes a time of do or die!
Addictions are truly horrible afflictions and some onlookers treat the addict as though he were spineless, when in fact he cannot help himself. He is torn between right and wrong and has no defense against his roller-coaster behavior. Ask an addict who is consumed by his addiction and he will tell you that he is tired. His life is in shambles, but he cannot seem to pull himself up.
Day after day the thought of a drug or a drink (or conquest for the sex addict) eats at his soul until he quenches the desire to drink or drug. After relinquishing his hold on temptation, he partakes of his poison. He always feels like this time he will be able to enjoy the calm of serenity, but, it doesn't happen. He begin to feel that he is insane and in some cases, there are those who have lost the mental capacity to deal with reality.
Through all of this pain and anquish, the addict, regardless of what his addiction may be, will have no choices left. He will drink to die unless something happens.
Men are born with the idea that there is some force in the Universe. He may not know what the force is or how it has existed over the milleniums, but he must know it's there. All he has to do is think that the force who controls life, might just help him. This is not an easy concept for the addict and this is often achieved only at the last moment of his total self-destruction. He beats on the wall and asks for death to come because he cannot bear the pain of his addiction any longer.
Some will admit that at that moment, a voice from a higher power, whispers "All right then, let me help you!"
That voice in that time of need may be the first of many spiritual awakenings of the addict's life. But it is a huge beginning. The addict lifts the phone and calls for help. It might be a call to Alcoholics Anonymous or to the local minister or a detox center. Whichever it
