Rabbit.org is the website of the House Rabbit Society (HRS), an international non profit organization that educates the public on rabbit care and rescues rabbits from animal shelters.
The site is full of informative articles some of which are translated into other languages including Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian and more making this a very useful site for those not just in the US but around the world who need information on how to care for their house rabbit.
For the first time visitor or indeed first time rabbit owner you'll find links to House Rabbits 101, the House Rabbit Handbook which can be purchased from Amazon along with videos and/or DVDs plus FAQ'S in the form of articles about rabbit toys, housing, litter training, diet and vets and more.
In the adoption section you'll find links to Bunny Foster homes all over the US which lead off to outside sites where you can view information and adopt a bunny in your own area.
The behaviour and care sections covers such topics as litter training, socializing, rabbit personality, aggression and age-related behaviour, diet, housing, mental health, and grooming. In the separate health section you'll find information on specific medical conditions, choosing a vet, caring for a disabled or elderly rabbit and much more.
I'm pretty sure this site covers everything a rabbit owner needs to know the problem I have is how this information is laid out.
The site starts off well, the homepage looks good, it's easy to see what the site covers and the little round bunny photos which accompany each link on the navigation sidebars is a cute addition.
But as soon as you click away from the homepage the site turns into the equivalent of a textbook complete with index page which leads off to the individual articles - Just black print on a white page without any images which makes a very boring website in my opinion. Sure, I know this is an informational site so I wasn't expecting bunny themed games or animated rabbits hopping across the screen but for me all of that text is just too basic, boring and rather like being back at school!
There is a section with Pictures, Fun Stuff and Stories but again, it's setup with an index page with links leading off to the text. For me, this site does not have the fun, informative and interesting elements of other pet websites such as Animal World and Pet Place which keep you engaged and interested all the way through whilst you learn new things about your pet.
Personally I would only visit this site if I needed to find out some specific information about caring for a house rabbit but even then it would be hard not to fall asleep whilst reading all that plain, boring and unbroken text - Non readers you have been warned!
