As a freshman for Davidson, Stephen Curry took the nation by storm with his smooth shooting stroke and silky game. His fame grew as a sophomore, when he was among the nation's leaders in scoring and led the Cinderella Davidson team to an Elite Eight performance before losing to eventual national champion Kansas. In his junior season, he seamlessly changed positions to PG and thrived, running the offense while still creating his own offense. After his junior season, he has decided to enter the NBA Draft, where he will certainly be a lottery pick and might go as high as #3.
One comparison that people are tossing around for Stephen Curry's game is Reggie Miller. It's not hard to see why. Curry was likely the best shooter in college basketball over the past couple of seasons (with over 400 3-pointers made in his 3 collegiate seasons), while Reggie Miller might be the best shooter in the history of the NBA. Both have very quick releases, which allows them to get a shot off even if a defender is right on them. Both are great at moving without the ball, utilizing screens from teammates in a sneaky way to get open, and then having the ability to square up and get a good shot off in the blink of an eye. Also, both players have shown the ability to hit big shots. Who can forget Reggie Miller scoring 6 points in 7 seconds against the Knicks in Madison Square Garden? Stephen Curry also has hit a number of big shots in big games in his short collegiate career. Both guys can shoot the ball even when the stakes are the highest.
However, there are a lot of differences in their game. For one, their size. Reggie Miller was about 6'7'', while Curry is about 6'3''. This has a huge effect on how they play their game and how they can get their shots off. Miller was strictly an off guard, while Stephen Curry will likely be asked to play primarily the point. There is also a difference in the way that they get their points. Miller was almost strictly a catch-and-shoot player (and maybe the best at that in the history of the NBA), while Curry is slightly more adept at creating his own shot. Curry has a better handle than Miller does, which allows him to get to the basket a little better than Miller could. Another difference is that Curry is probably a better passer than Miller was, which is another reason that he should be able to play PG.
Just the fact that Curry would even be compared to Reggie Miller is a huge testament to his ability. Miller was one of the best shooters to ever play, and was a great player for many years. While Curry might not ever reach the ability to play at as high of a level as Reggie Miller was at, he should be a very good player in the NBA for many years, and will make whatever team that drafts him in the lottery very happy.
