Video game characters: Cait Sith from Final Fantasy VII

by Matt Bird

Created on: June 23, 2009

A slick dealer with a goofy appearance, Cait Sith first approaches the party in the Golden Saucer. Essentially a fortune telling machine with his strange stuffed Moogle, Cait Sith ends up supplying Cloud with a series of useless fortunes - until one ominous one prompts him into joining the group out of curiosity.

He travels with the group as just a tag along, not being of any real importance to the plot, until the group gets a hold of the key necessary to open the Temple of the Ancients, Sephiroth's destination. Having won it from Dio, the owner of the Golden Saucer, they receive a proposition from Cait Sith that they all stay at the Saucer's inn for the night, as he knows somebody there and can get them in for free.

That night, Cloud and one other person - usually Aeris or Tifa - end up going on a date, touring the Saucer's various attractions. After getting off a romantic gondola ride around the outside of the Saucer, they emerge back in the central area to find Cait Sith wandering off on his own. They notice, too, that he's filched the key to the temple. Calling out to him, they scare Cait Sith into running, and pursue him through all the areas of the Saucer.

They finally corner him at the Chocobo Racing arena, but by then it's too late: a Shinra helicopter containing Tseng of the Turks descends, and Tseng takes the key from Cait Sith. It leaves Cait Sith to the mercy of Cloud and his companion, and the cat reveals that he's been a Shinra spy all along. He also reveals that Shinra has captured Marlene, Barret's daughter, and Aeris's mother Elmyra, and that the team has no choice but to keep Cait Sith on it. Fuming, Cloud has no choice, and so they continue traveling together.

After picking their way through the Temple of the Ancients the team discovers the Black Materia Sephiroth has coveted for so long. The Black Materia, however, is actually the temple itself, and solving a riddle will reduce the materia to a hand-held form. Doing that, of course, will crush anybody still inside the temple, thus acting as a wonderful defense against malicious intentions. The team needs the materia, so Cait Sith offers to perform the puzzle so the team can collect the materia, pausing first to tell one last fortune for Cloud and Aeris: he says that they are perfectly matched as a couple, and feels sorry for Tifa in the bargain. He then performs the puzzle and the temple crushes his body.

Soon after a replacement Cait Sith bounds up, though it arrives at a bad time:
