Money and what and where it can buy is the new God, however, with the collapse of the capitalist system since 2007 new values are coming to the fore. The natural cycle of greed followed by thrift has suddenly exposed the faux-riche as ardent borrowers whose time has come to repay their excessive loans. Consumerism was supreme. 24/7 shopping was the chief leisure activity. Shopping malls were the new cathedrals where the God of consumerism reigned supreme. Sadly, the pursuit of money results in abnormal behaviour and the inevitable descent into brutal vulgarity. More more more creates more need need need. Why is this?
North America may be responsible for selfish capitalism, however, far removed from its coastlines there are some of the most caring and effective communities in the world, fully confirmed by community oriented and praiseworthy actions, such as concern for fellow humans.
Humanity excels when vivacious and playful, this is unnatural, but merely an occasional interlude enjoyed by all people intermittently, a product of war between biology and society that is intrinsic to our psychological development. Shopping is insidious. The less well off toil 24 hours daily in sweat shops to fully service the perceived needs of the capitalist world. China has vast factories whehe workers are locked in and live over factory floors. Why should the many lose their human rights for the sake of the few?
Retail therapy is frivolous and selfish. Our imagination retains the idea that modernity has deprived us of a more authentic existence, one more in touch with ourselves and our environment. Some people's environments consist of the area between the taxi or bus and their apartments! A general lack of awareness of the plight of others is a consequence of this lack of awareness.
'What of this world so full of care, we have no time to stand and stare' Wordsworth. People shoud take time out, it pays in the long run.
Humanity must return to a more caring role. Why are SUVs so popular when they cause a massive carbon footprint and are generally driven by hard faced blondes for the school run? Does everything one buys have to cause such distress? A designer handbag costing $4,000 may be made in the same counterfeit sweatshop excepting the outrageously priced designer label!
People will return to living in harmony with the world and its ways, the sooner the better.
