I am a laid back traveler. I prefer to make flexible travel arrangements no matter where I go. I have found through years of travel experience that this is definitely the way to go. You want the opportunity to maximize your potential for fun and relaxation and the only way to do this on vacation is to go with the flow.
Whenever I have traveled with a strict itinerary I have found myself with regrets at the end of the trip. There is never enough time to do the things which present themselves along the way if every minute has been planned in advance. This is not to say that you should not plan any details of your trip. Especially when travelling to other countries it is always important to have a back up plan.
So how should you plan your next vacation? First you should know how long you have for the vacation (if it is less than a week you should stick to one or two cities). Once you have chosen your destination you should research attractions and lodging in the area. Consider alternatives to hotels (bed and breakfast, hostel etc.) these locations often have common rooms where you will be able to meet other travelers and share new travel tips and ideas. Read reviews by other travelers online before reserving a room or paying for anything. You should make a list of what the area has to offer and rank these activities by relevance to your trip. Don't have your heart set on every attraction on the list because if you "go with the flow" you will never make it past the first two planned activities.
From the minute you step out your front door you are in vacation mode. Try to forget about everyday stresses and just be happy during your vacation. Make it a point to speak with as many people you can, be friendly with everyone. I guarantee your mood will lift and you will make many new friends. The best part about meeting people on vacation is being able to change your plans at a moments notice to do something that sounds better!
If you are able to treat yourself to an even longer vacation of two or more months think about touring a continent. You can follow the same tips for the short trip but chose several cities in different countries across South America. Research transportation and lodging as well as activities for each city but be prepared to go in a whole new direction once you arrive in country. The best trip of my life was a solo summer in Argentina and Uruguay. I made the least amount of plans necessary and traveled where the wind blew. I encourage you to do the same.
