Art: A waste of time or meaningful expression?

Art, a magnificent form of self expression! That said, I think it now has to be said - I believe art is a form of expression often coming from within the artist. A waste of time, oh no! Whether an artist paints from memory, imagination or sits outside painting beautiful scenery, he is creating something he has a talent for. Often when the artists work is being viewed, people will say I wonder what it means? Or The artist must have been very happy/sad when he painted this! Sometimes they are quite right and other times not. We will all probably see something different in a painting. It's the way we look at things; after all we are all different.

I started enjoying painting and drawing at a very early age, although appreciation for it came when I was a little older. Art is something everyone can participate in and something we can all do. When painting or drawing I paint what I see, and other's will see it differently to how I do.

When creating an art-work or work of art, once again, depending on how we look at it, something beautiful happens in-side of me. It is difficult to describe, as it is something felt on a deeply personal level, but I can liken it to listening to a song or a beautiful piece of music that touches me and I don't only hear it with my ears, but hear and feel it right in the middle of my solar plexus. Painting is like that only better. The peace and tranquillity felt is amazing, often resulting in a natural high! Time is forgotten and all thoughts are absorbed and focused on the work in creation. The satisfaction felt when it is completed, and the realisation, 'I am tired, but happily so! How can such joy, peace and satisfaction in being creative be called a waste of time? But, there are some who think so, but that is the individuals right, after all we do have free will. Some will often criticise art pieces, that too is ok, as we are all different and appreciate different things.

Art has been used as a way of recording history long before the camera was invented. Historical paintings are found in most history books and gives us a glimpse into what life was like in that particular period of time. These paintings enable us to look back in time, seeing different events recorded by art.

My belief is we are all artists and can create a beautiful painting. For those of you that have not tried it, I encourage you to give it a go. You will be nicely surprised!
