Each scrapbooker has a unique style, but what they all have in common is the ability to tell a story. One way to convey a message on a scrapbook page is to create a focal point. Look at any magazine cover and your attention is immediately drawn to a specific object, most often a great photograph. This photo serves as the cover's focal point and makes the viewer stop and look.

Just like a magazine, each scrapbook page layout should have a focal point to help the viewer know where to start. Below are suggestions to create a scrapbook layout that features a focal point photo.

Use a striking photo

Your focal point photo should be clear, capture emotion and have an uncluttered background. In order to get an attention grabbing photo, become a great photographer. Experiment with your camera and photograph the subject from different angles. Take plenty of close-up shots for compelling images and use natural light when possible.

Photo-editing software can be utilized to improve, crop, enlarge your favorite photo or change it from color to sepia or black and white. If you decide to add other photos to the page, make them smaller in size so they do not distract from your focal point.

Mat or frame the photo

The best way to show-off a focal point photo is to mat it with black or white cardstock and then mat it again with up to two more complementary colors of cardstock that highlight the photo. Another option is to border the photo with a pre-made frame. To add dimension to the page, adhere adhesive spacers, like glue dots or foam squares, to the backside of the matted photo.

Decide on photo placement

Your focal point does not have to be directly in the center of the page layout. An off-centered or angled photo position works well as a focal point. Use the Rule of Thirds when designing the layout. Make imaginary lines on your page like a tic-tac-toe board and place the focal point photo and other important page elements where the lines intersect.

Place other elements near the focal point

Do not be limited by centering a title on top of the page. A page title can also go under the photo, positioned sideways or placed to the right or left side of the photo. The same idea works for journaling so be creative. Embellishments add a decorative touch and should not overwhelm a scrapbook layout. Placed near the focal point, a pressed flower, ribbon or metal charm can enhance a simple layout and add texture to the page.

When you step back and look at the completed page, your eye will naturally focus on the focal point. You should be able to feel the simplicity of the layout and not be distracted by any of the elements. As long as your scrapbook layout is balanced and flows well, the viewer will be pleased and enjoy looking at it longer.
