Spend wisely to save money

by David Dewitt

Created on: June 22, 2009

One of the biggest financial problems for most people is not about the amount of money they make but the amount of money they spend. Some people spend money like it grows on trees or some other silly notion. Americans seem to be addicted to spending and increasing their personal debt levels.

Many people fail to use common sense when approaching their personal spending. This could explain the rapid nature of our debt and spending crisis. One key to curbing this crisis and ending the spending chaos is to start spending money more wisely.

Track Spending

Do Some Research

Shop Around for the Best Price

Take Advantage of Sales

Track Spending

One problem with most spending it is impulsive and irregular. At the end of the day, most people have no idea how much money they spent that day. The first step to better money management is to begin tracking how money is spent.

Develop the habit of recording expenditure, down to the smallest item. Keeping this record will help reveal spending habits and show the depth of impulse buying. Recording expenditures will also make people think about what they are doing before they make a purchase.

Do Some Research

Take time to research the purchases made. Every major purchase should be studied before buying the item. Researching the purchase allows the buyer to understand the benefits and the drawbacks of specific items to make the best possible purchase.

Many people apply this kind of effort when buying a car or a home. Some study the various makes or models of cars with specific prices in mind. Those buying homes study the neighborhood, school district, construction of the home and other factors before buying a house. These same principles should work for major appliance purchases and other large expenses.

Shop Around for the Best Price

Take the time to compare prices before buying the item. Examine all of the costs involved to be sure to get the best deal. Making a purchase without comparing prices will cost more money in the end.

Virtually every item that is purchased can be the subject of a comparison pricing. Take a little time to do these price comparisons and search for special deals. Comparison shopping can reveal unadvertised specials. Buying a new washing machine can be less expensive purchasing a discontinued floor model.

Take Advantage of Sales

Every store with every kind of product runs specials or sales. Watch the weekly advertisements and check the internet for specials. Knowing the prices at other stores can also lead to additional savings. Making use of sales can lead to large savings especially if the store will match or beat competitors pricing.

Spending money in a wise manner can lead to further financial freedom. Wise spending begins with knowing personal spending habits, researching products before the purchase, shop around for the best price, and use sales to the greatest advantage. Taking the time to think through spending always pays off in the end.
