What is the origin of fantasy creatures?

Mythology and legend are filled with tales of fantastic creatures composed of many different features from many different kinds of animals. One of the largest statues in the world is devoted to the image of a creature of "Fantasy" - the Sphinx in Egypt.

One feels compelled to ask, upon reflection, why would a civilization as advanced (for that time) as the Egyptians be interested enough in a creature of pure fantasy to devote such a massive undertaking as building an enormous stone statue weighing thousands of tons?

There are many well known stories of mythological creatures reportedly having magical or philosophical virtues beyond that of humans. Some were even given god-like status. Perhaps the Egyptians worshiped the virtues embodied in a Sphinx, though it seems rather an overblown display for an "Ideal". On the other hand though, perhaps the image was based on something real, physical - living!

The world renowned psychic and healer Edgar Cayce gave readings regarding the time on Earth when Atlantis and Lemuria were still situated above the waves. In those readings Cayce described the Earth at that time as being a place more malleable and more easily manipulated by the will. According to Cayce, the physical laws of the world then were not really set in stone, so to speak, as they are now.

Supposedly, back then, it was possible for animals of different species to inter-breed and create "Things" (as they were referred to) which had the physical characteristics of both parents, whether those parents were human and lion (as the Sphinx), or human and horse, or lion and eagle, or what have you.

Many, many are the stories handed down through antiquity of the iniquity of humanity run amuck, and this case is no different. Certain humans, seeking power and prestige, went against what they knew to be right, they willfully did wrong, defying the Will of God. They repeatedly mated with beasts and fowl and fish and reptiles, and created soul-less abominations which then became slaves to their human creators. Despite being of high intelligence and possessing remarkable abilities, these soul-less Things were subservient to their creators, living miserable lives of drudgery and servitude.

Cayce goes on to tell how the Things eventually rose up in revolt against their masters and many of them were killed, along with many humans as well. After the revolt, many of the creatures lived on, sometimes in abnormally long lives. Many bred and lived healthy, productive lives while others, because of their defects and abnormalities, were doomed and soon died out.

Thus we have in legend, folk tale and myth the stories of such strange and amazing creatures as minotaurs, griffins, the Cerberus, centaurs and the Sphinx, among others.

In many ways, it was a dark age for the Earth and its inhabitants, despite the advanced nature of the civilization which was predominant at that time. But that is another story.
