Some upscale salons, with their stylish decor and fashionable employees, make potential clients a little nervous about booking that first appointment.
There are a few points to consider when booking an appointment at a hair salon:
1. What is the purpose of your appointment?
Are you looking for a new haircut, a simple trim, coloring, highlights, or a special occasion updo? Do you know what you want to have done or do you want to add time for a consultation?
A stylist should spend a few minutes discussing your hair before every appointment, but if you are looking for a new style or want a color consultation it's best to let the salon know in advance. The receptionist may recommend coming in early so you can look through their style books.
If you are planning to have your hair styled for a special occasion, such as a wedding, ask about scheduling an advance consultation to discuss possible styles prior to the big day.
2. Which stylist would you like to see?
If you already have a stylist in mind, simply arrange an appointment on her schedule. Keep in mind that in demand stylists may be booked far in advance. If the next available appointment is two months out, you can take it but also ask to be put on a cancellation list to be notified if anything opens up sooner.
If you are looking for a new stylist, ask for advice on which stylist would be a good match. Some stylists may have a flair for short styles and others may love working with long flowing locks. For special occasion looks, salons may have stylists who are particularly adept at creating elaborate updos.
3. How much will the service cost?
As a potential client, ask about pricing before booking your appointment. Every salon has its own service menu, stylist levels, and pricing. The cost of each service may vary depending on the experience level of the stylist or if you are booking an appointment with the salon owner.
A service menu will be available at the salon and online if the salon has a website. The service menu may list the starting price or a range of prices for each service. Be sure to ask what your specific stylist will charge prior to booking the appointment.
4. Does the salon have a cancellation policy or no show fees?
If you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment, always try to give the salon a minimum of 24 hours notice. This is a common courtesy and also lets the salon call other clients who may be waiting for an opening.
Some upscale salons require notice before rescheduling and may charge hefty no show fees if you fail to show up for your appointment. Always ask about the salon's cancellation policy and potential no show fees when booking the appointment.
Do not be intimidated when calling a salon for an appointment. To avoid misunderstandings, always ask for specific information about your stylist, what services are included in your appointment, and what the price will be. If you are prepared for the appointment you are much more likely to have a positive experience.
