Success is in the eye of the beholder and determining whether or not you are successful often has to do with your own measure of the word. However, being more successful then most writers isn't necessarily hard to do. It requires time, effort, and a dash of talent (though not much). Knowing the steps that you should take to become a successful writer can help with the process of getting it done.
Write.
It is important that a writer who wants to be successful actually writes. It isn't always easy, but it is the first step toward success in writing. Many writers practice their craft every now and again and feel good about what they produce, but they never take the time to make writing a regular part of their lives. The writer who desires to be successful should plan on writing regularly (daily is best) and should set aside time to get certain things done. They should write a lot and work towards building it into a habit.
Write Some More.
It isn't enough to just write a little bit. Success for a writer always means writing a lot. Even if you are the only one that will ever see what you write, you need to do lots of it.
Edit.
Once you have something written you need to edit it. It isn't always and easy process and often takes a ton of time, but it is an important part of the process. Taking the time to edit is very important for getting a piece ready for the next part of being successful.
Put It Out There.
Tons of writers spend hours writing articles, books, novels, stories, and poetry without ever showing anyone. This doesn't work, but it protects them from rejection and they feel okay with that, at least most of the time. However, to be truly successful you need to show your work to others. Whether you are sharing it with friends or family or you are working to get it published you need to put it out into the world.
Know Success.
Many people feel that if they aren't the next Stephen King then they aren't successful or can't be successful without publishing lots of different things. However, the publishing industry is one that is hard to break into. A writer can be successful without publishing anything and certainly without publishing lots. Just knowing that you have written something, edited it, and gotten it out there is enough for a writer to be more successful then most.
Most writers are those who enjoy writing, feel it running through their blood, and yet don't do anything with it. Some will write a few things and keep them hidden away. Some will even edit those things. But few will get their work out there so others can read it. Working toward accomplishing those three things will make a writer successful even if they never publish a single piece.
