~~ CARMELA'S CHILDHOOD ~~
I felt really sad as I sat listening to my mother tell me about her childhood. I was only 14 when my grandmother Gina died, and I had never thought to ask her or my mother about how they had lived with such a large family. She didn't live her childhood as all normal kids do: with that big family she had to help her mother by sorting out matching materials and threads for the garments; writing down clients names and addresses and preparing invoices as well. She also had to look after her little sisters and brothers before and after school, as my grandmother used to have them quickly and in pairs! I think this is where my mother learned such strong discipline. She had to be firm, but kind, and keep peace because she was the oldest, and I cannot even imagine the responsibilities she had.
I think it was a bit too much for a little girl to hold such big responsibility and to study for school as well. She was very ambitious and with little time to spare and in such a small place (and no room to study) she managed to pass her exams and finished her primary education with high marks.
~~ A NORMAL TEENAGER? ~~
She grew up to be a very beautiful young woman, with curly dark long hair down to her waist and big beautiful green eyes. She always was the centre of attraction: tall and slender (even now in her fifties, she still has that figure to die for!). She was a very clever, stubborn and strong personality.
She trained to be an air hostess without her mother's knowledge; her mother had wanted her to be a doctor, so it was a huge shock for my grandmother to learn that her daughter was "going to be a SERVANT!" as she used to say!
She applied for her first job as an air hostess, her 'easy-to-talk-to' personality and warm smile opened the door widely for her career and so she was accepted with pleasure.
~~ MEETING THE CAPTAIN ~~
The captain of the flight has to greet the new staff and talk to them briefly, so as a part of her new job she had to meet the captain. It was my dad! You must know that the moment he saw her, she bewitched him with her looks and her figure and my dad was speechless!
They worked together for few weeks and no one made the first step. My dad was extremely mad about her, but he was shy. He wouldn't dare to ask her out; my mother with her stubborn mind would never ask a man out (perhaps I've got that attitude from her as well). It went on like that until a friend of my dad let him know that he was interested in Carmela and intended
