What's the use of getting high?

Some people say that getting high expands your mind, it alters your concious and makes you think about things in a different light. Some rock stars are infamous for smoking marijuana, perhaps believing this saprks their creativity.

However, from my personal experience of smoking marijuana, what I can tell you is it gave me an escape from reality and not care about things. Yes, i enjoyed it, but I would not reccommend it to anyone.

I started smoking the ocassional joint while I was at university and after two years I started buying my own supply and then it became quite an addiction. Barely a day went by without me getting high. My coursework suffered severely as a result as did aspects of my social life.

While at university I was studying photography, a creative course and nine out of ten people in the art school I attended seemed to have experimented with cannabis. For most people it seemed an addiction and although it is an illegal drug, I always knew someone who could get ahold of some for me.

As for expanding my mind, it may have made me think about things differently, finding the slightest thing funny and perhaps enjoying music more. However, as I said, it did become a slight addiction and my course work suffered. My concentration span was very minimal and I'm not sure I ever fully recovered now that I have stopped using the stuff. I witnessed other people start using cannabis and moving onto harder drugs. Fortunately, I had just about enough sense not to do that, but the risk was there as I socialised with people who did.

As for physical health, now that I've stopped smoking, I don't get colds, or sore throats so often and I certainly don't sneeze so much these days. I am worried that I may start again as sometimes it seems like a good idea, but then I listen to the lyrics of songs written by rock stars who were stoners and they make absolutely no sense whatsoever, which reminds me of how messed up my head must've been.

There's a song by 'Afroman' called 'Because I got High', and although it's an up beat song, he sings about how cannabis has had adverse effects on his life. I just hope people who listen to that song take heed of what he is actually saying, rather than thinking he galmourises it.
