Finding a focal point in a room might seem a little bit like a puzzle. Once you find that focal point you have solved your problem. To make a room appear organized with a purpose you need to find that focal point. The focal point focuses your attention on one spot giving you a purpose in your space. You can design your room around that point balancing everything around it.
How do you find that focal point? Where is it? How do I know I have found it? To find it you need to observe for a minute what in your room is worth looking at what is the first thing your eye is drawn to. It could be a nice stone fireplace, a large bay window, or you may have to create one. You can create one easily. Look in the room is there a wall that you see as soon as you walk into your room? Take that wall and paint it a separate color and make it an accent wall and place your furniture in the room based on that wall. Be creative and make sure you evenly balance it out. If you are placing a sofa on that wall balance it by adding an end table to each side with table lamps and a large picture on the wall behind it. Lets say your are making the fireplace the focal point you may want to add two large plants on either side of it or a nice candle accessories to the mantel. Maybe you would like to speak with an electrician and install to wall sconces on either side of it or even some recessed wall washers angled strategically toward the fireplace. Frame it with book cases on either side or place a really special painting above it. What if you need to design around that bay window? Pay special attention to the window treatments, let the light in and arrange your furniture towards it. As you arrange your furniture you should use an area rug to tie it together.
Always make sure that the focal point in your room is tastefully designed and not overdone. Think of it like looking under a microscope or even into a magnifying glass. It is the most important part of the room. How you design it is purely up to you but just remember to design the rest of the room around it. Get your ideas going and make sure to remember that less is always more. If you make your focal point or any point in your room to busy it is bound to give you a feeling of chaos and disorder. If paint choices can evoke your emotions then lets imagine what a room with too much can do. You can do so many things to this one focus area so have fun with it and just remember every room should have one. I challenge you to find your focal point today and I guarantee that your whole room will fall into place.
