If you write an article it is important that you use the correct grammar styles and that your article can be read on an easy way.
Semi-colons are important if you want to limit the quantity of your sentences. It is often easier to read with semi-colons then you make every time a new sentence.
Semi-colons are in fact used to make from two sentences one sentence. By example :
Mr Brown is a financial expert; however he lost previous year 10% of his portfolio in shares.

Another use of semi-colons is this one to separate a summary of words which are separated by a comma. By example : I visited the last years many cities in Europe :
Vienna, Austria; Rome, Italy; London, England; Paris, France and some others.

If you want to sent an email to different persons in one time you need to separate the email addresses with semi-colons.

In fact semi-colons are used to make a longer pause in a sentence than a comma but not as long than a punctuation.
Be careful that you don't use too much semi-colons. It is important that your article will be clear and don't exaggerate with too many breaks.
