There once was a little girl named Cloe that more than anything wanted a puppy. She patiently waited through Christmas, Valentine's Day and even Easter had come and gone and even though Cloe was sure she told her parents how much she truly wanted a puppy, it looked to Cloe like is was not meant to be.
But then... on the morning of Cloe's 8th birthday, her parents woke her very early. "Come Cloe" her mother said, "Dad and I have a big surprise!" "Whatever could it be mother? Perhaps a puppy?" asked Cloe.
Her father responded. "Ah my sweet child, you will have to be patient...good things come to those who wait." And with that, her parents loaded her into the car and away they drove.
It wasn't until they pulled into the parking lot of the big brown building that Cloe noticed a leash sitting on her mother's lap.
"Mommy! Daddy!" she cried. "Are we getting a puppy?"
"We sure are" responded her mother "And you can have any puppy you choose!" Cloe squealed with delight.
The three headed in to the animal shelter and straight to the puppy cages. There were black puppies and brown puppies, tall puppies and short puppies, skinny puppies and in the very last cage was the chubbiest puppy Cloe had ever seen. He had fluffy brown hair and big brown eyes with a cute little button nose.
"I want this one!" shrieked Cloe with excitement.
Her father asked "Are you sure Cloe, are you very sure this is the puppy you want?"
"Oh yes father! This is the chubbiest puppy I have ever seen and he is so cute, I will call him Max and I want to love him forever." And so they took the chubby puppy home.
Cloe woke the next morning full of excitement ready to take her new chubby puppy for a walk. "Mother" she called down the hall, "I am taking Max to the park" she said.
"Be careful Cloe and be sure to introduce him to all the dogs from the neighborhood, Max should have friends" she said.
"I will mother!" Cloe said and out the door she went heading off to the park.
Max was very excited to be at the park, there were trees and birds and lots of other puppies. Max trotted over to a group of puppies and introduced himself "Hi guys, I'm Max!"
But the other puppies looked at him and began to laugh. A tall black puppy said "You sure are chubby!"
And a skinny white puppy said "Yes very chubby, you can't be friends with us. You are just too chubby!"
Max lowered his head in sadness and trotted back to Cloe.
"Come on Max, go play with your new friends" said Cloe but Max wouldn't budge. "Don't be sad Max,
