Social media may have been "ho-hum" to the average businessperson until we got a wake-up call from the people of Iran. We are in the midst of witnessing a revolution, based upon social information being entered into the ether.Twitter and Google both had extra lines set up to accommodate the Iranian situation. I personally, was in denial about the value of social networking until I went to a business workshop presented by the America's Best Jewelers, Http:
The panelists included heads of Ylang 23, Shulan's Fairlawn, and Gary Michael's Fine Jewelry, all key players in the forefront of an industry that is based upon social connections and social status. We must emerge with our "brand" into the arenas of Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, iGoogle, and blogging.
The question was asked repeatedly, which is the best way to communicate with the customer? One answer remains as having value in my mind. The best way to communicate with your customer is however they want you to. If they prefer email, use email, and if they want to checkout your daily entries on your business blog without being obligate to respond, so be it. If your customer wants you to telephone them as soon as their favorite line hits the store, call them on the phone. In other words, common courtesy and respect for the person supporting us, the customer, is still ALWAYS RIGHT.
Post your wedding engagement onto you Business Facebook. Text codes for your younger generation. Twitter is cryptic, so think in elementary but powerful messages, update with iPhone, and remember our survival is dependent on out ability to change with the buying public. The jewelry industry retailers in particular are a traditional group, so they may have to be the most hungry before they actually listen to these calls from the wind. Avon is fast forward with what it offers its independent representatives with Facebook and website connections.
So who knows how to do all this stuff, and who has time? Compatible with this problem is the answer and it is there are now social media PR firms to deal exactly with this new realm of advertising and consultation. The good news and the bad news, depending on your outlook is that Facebook interconnectivity and on-line marketing means one thing....immediate information.
Hang onto your socks, and get ready for this new world of business. Make it fun and by all means be honest, forthright, and prudent in all your online business dealings because if you are bad-mouthed on the Internet, you could be losing an unknown but significant number of clients.
