Testing your home for radon

and 'penetrating concrete sealer' has been shown to slow radon infiltration through concrete. But while both types of radon sealers are useful for lowering radon gas levels to some extent, they should always be used as part of a comprehensive radon mitigation system - because in order to successfully overcome a radon problem, you have to first determine both how and where the gas is entering a building.

You can see why using radon sealers alone, without first knowing how or where the gas is coming from, is not the most effective solution to a radon gas problem. Assuming that applying radon sealers will provide sufficient protection against the risk of lung cancer from exposure to radon gas is a dangerous mistake that could imperil the health of your family.

In conclusion, to make your home safe from radon health hazards, your first responsibility is to determine whether you do have a radon problem. Home radon test kits are widely available and relatively simple to use. Do not rely on the initial radon readings of a short-term test. Follow it up with a long-term radon test because radon concentrations change over time. This applies to radon-resistant homes as well.

Finally, radon remediation systems can only be effective when it is known where and how radon infiltration is taking place. The blind use of radon sealers could lull you into a dangerous sense of false security.
