There are numerous styles of interior design displayed in home magazines and books, but how do you decide which one is for you? There are several questions that can help you discover what your own personal style is. This article provides a brief set of questions that should give you a pretty good idea.
What sort of personality do you have?
Your personality can have a significant effect on the type of interior design that will suit you. If you are a social butterfly, your home needs to offer the flexibility to entertain. If you are more ordered, you might feel more comfortable in a neat, minimalist home. If you are very creative, you might like a home that has lots of artistic or avante garde touches.
What are you drawn to?
Do you like warm colors like red and yellow, or do you feel more comfortable with cool colors like neutrals, greens and blues. Do any textures stand out? A great way to discover what you naturally like is to collect items to create a mood board with. Qualified designers often use these are an inspiration tool. Simply gather together objects that you feel drawn to, such as; paint chips, magazine pictures, fabric swatches and any other miscellaneous objects. Think about what sort of design will suit the way you live. Consider what would make you feel comfortable when going through the day to day tasks of eating, sleeping and relaxing after work.
What are your passions and hobbies?
Your passions and hobbies can provide a good indication of what your personal style is. If you are a nature lover, who enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, natural elements would probably reflect your personal style. If you love old movies, perhaps a period setting might inspire you. If you are a technology buff, a very modern look might be right up your alley.
It is very important to understand what suits you before buying paint, or booking a contractor. This is because your home should be decorated in a way that provides you with a happy, comfortable place to live. Give some serious thought to the questions above, before making any decisions. If you share a home with others you will also need to work out a way to meet everyone else's needs.
