Traveling is a powerful tool. Those who want to experience other cultures and other people may use travel as a method to do so. Those who travel undoubtedly see the world with wide-opened eyes. And, more importantly, everyone who comes back home realize the importance of home as well as the importance of worldliness.
More and more people are trying to make the time to travel. Traveling is no longer an activity reserved for the rich and powerful. Yet, is everyone taking something home from those travels? When a person travels, he is able to experience something outside from his familiar environment. His travels expose him to new people and new places, which may require that he think twice about himself and his actions towards them. This constant ability to change is needed in a world that is filled with all different kinds of people, people who have differing customs.
Most importantly, however, those who return from their travels become more open-minded. No longer will they think about just themselves and their immediate surroundings. Instead, they will realize that the world must work together on a global scale, and if that is to happen, every culture and nation must be able to understand each other. This may seem like a difficult or too grand of a concept, at first, but it is possible through traveling.
A more pertinent example to the subject may be the television show on MTV called "Exiled." In this show, well-off teens are sent to various locations around the globe, mostly to poor, underprivileged countries. These teens learn another teen's culture, and try to live as close to that culture as possible. The intention is to make the well-off teen "well-rounded," which requires an understanding that there are people who exist who have very little money. Traveling is truly an eye-opener.
However, most people tend to travel to touristy destinations. Relaxation seems to be one of the most important motivating factors for traveling. However, does this type of traveling give anything back to the traveler? In this case, if the traveler is able to learn something about the country in which he or she is traveling in, then at least something has been gained. But, to treat the locals as if they had no culture is to lose something altogether.
Traveling is a great way to broaden your horizons and make yourself worldly. The next time that you travel, be sure to try to take something worthy back home with you.
