Service warning: Brakes are making noise

A good rule to follow when dealing with brakes is simply stop and investigate the first sound coming from the brakes. Have a professional check it out.

1. The first sound usually heard comes from the wear indicators, which are attached to the brake pads on disc brakes. When the brake pads have worn to an unsafe limit, the indicators will contact the brake rotor, making a squealing noise. At this point, have the brakes checked and repaired or you'll face much higher repair bills later.

2. Beyond the wear indicator noise, the sounds may come in a variety of squeals, but when it gets to a scrubbing noise, almost certainly serious damage has been done. The scrubbing noise is the result of metal-to-metal contact between the brake linings and the rotor or brake drum. At this point, there will be damage to the rotor or brake drum and possibly the brake caliper.
