Patellar Dislocation
The slipping of the kneecap is referred to as patellar dislocation. The kneecap slips from its groove causing discomfort and sometimes pain for the dog. The kneecap may fall back into place on its own but may require human assistance. Severe cases can be remedied with surgery.
Umbilical Hernia
An umbilical hernia is thought to be genetically inherited within certain breeds including the Pekingese. This condition is caused by the abdominal contents pushing out through the abdominal wall near the umbilicus. Minor cases typically should not cause alarm but severe cases need to be repaired surgically.
Whelping Issues
Small dog breeds can have whelping issues due to their small stature. The smaller the female, the more problems that may occur. Before breeding a Pekingese, owners should research this issue fully to be prepared for any emergencies that may arise during delivery. Never leave a whelping mother unattended and have a veterinarian on stand-by should the puppies need delivered via c-section.
Throughout history, dogs have been bred for the creation of certain characteristics and traits. In some breeds like the Pekingese, this breeding process has translated into common health concerns that owners and potential owners should be aware of. Like with all breeds, the health of a dog can be directly affected by its environment. Proper nutrition, handling, and medical care can mean the difference in a healthy Pekingese and one that has serious medical conditions.
