Common health problems in Pekingese dogs

by Angie Pollock

Created on: June 20, 2009

The Pekingese has distinct features that make this breed one of the most popular breeds in the world. Their stunning coat, short muzzle, and rounded eyes are features that draw people to this unique breed. However, these characteristics of the Pekingese also lend to some of the common health problems known to the breed.

Entropion and Ectropion

Entropion is a common disorder found in dog breeds with large heads and loose facial skin. This condition of the eyelids can occur in either the upper or lower lids but is more common in lower eyelid. The eyelid will roll which allows the lashes to come into contact with the surface of the eye. As the lashes scrape on the eye, irritation and ulcerations and occur. To prevent permanent damage, surgery may be required to correct the condition.

Ectropion is also seen in dogs with loose facial skin. The lower eyelid will droop exposing the eye surface leading to eye irritation, infections, and conjunctivitis. Mild cases can be treated with prescribed medications but severe and repeated bouts of this illness may require surgical treatment.

Eye Disorders

Because the eyes of the Pekingese protrude from the head, the eyes are susceptible to injuries. Other eye disorders that this breed may acquire include ulcers, cataracts, and glaucoma. Ulcers are usually caused by trauma to the eye while cataracts and glaucoma are generally seen as the dog ages. All of these conditions should be medically treated by a veterinarian which may require surgery.

Respiratory Disorders

Short-nosed dogs like the Pekingese are prone to respiratory disorders. Referred to as a brachycephalic breed because of its head structure, owners may notice respiratory problems particularly during or after physical activities. The severity can range from mild wheezing and snorting to heavy, labored breathing. Owners should take precautions when their dog is active to avoid stress and heat exhaustion.

Herniated Discs

A disc is the cushion that protects the spinal cord. When a disc slips or "herniates", the cartilage surrounding the disc has been damaged. Fluid inside the cartilage can leak out and put pressure on the spinal cord. This chain of events causes inflammation and pain for the dog. Herniated discs can occur as the dog ages or due to an injury. Long, short-legged dogs like the Pekingese and Dachshund are prone to slipped discs. Treatments can include complete bed rest and medications for pain but severe cases may require surgery.
