Poetry: Careless

by Nancy Browne

Exposed

Camera's always captured him
Before the initial prank
Part of his lips turned upward
Holding fast, that devilish smirk
This one's taken at the beach

Where he's holding a coconut
In both hands
Palm trees waving
In the background
Waves suspended in mid-air
A small red canoe
Posing on the sand
With its rope wrapped around
Driftwood

He'll untie it and take it
To the water
Never asking permission
But before that
He'll smash the coconut
Against a rock
Splitting it in two or three parts
And leave it there
On the sand
He hated the taste of coconut
