Things to know before you go charter fishing

What exactly is saltwater charter fishing? It's booking passage on a fishing boat that has its own experienced crew and captain who are knowledgeable of the waters you'll be angling. These guys usually know where the fish are, so booking a charter is often your best bet for catching your limit. There's a wide variance in boats and services offered, so be prepared before you leave the dock, and ask a few questions before you put down a deposit.

How long?

Charters generally vary from half-day trips to full-day trips, and some offshore adventures include overnight trips. Near-shore fishing in bays, sounds, or estuaries might even be as short as two-three hours. What you need to inquire about is how much of the time on the boat will be spent fishing. For example, an eight-hour trip out to the snapper banks might require four hours of travel time to and from your destination, so that would leave only four hours for actual fishing.

What to bring?

Another important element is the question of bait, equipment, and fishing licenses. Many charter fishing packages include everything you'll need, but every boat is different, so ask before you go to ensure that you're prepared. If you have your own lucky rod, most boats will allow you to bring it along.

Food and beverages?

Some boats allow you to bring your own cooler, drinks, and snacks, while other boats provide these for their guests. Most boats that have their own galleys don't allow outside food and drinks to be brought aboard, but instead expect you to purchase items from them. As for alcoholic beverages, some boats allow them, and some don't. Be clear on all these rules for your specific charter. You don't want to spend a day on the high seas without sustenance!

Kids?

When you book your charter, be sure to tell the captain about anyone in your party under age eighteen. Some boats enforce strict age limits, while others welcome children and families and will even assist with the kids.

Restrooms?

Any ladies thinking of fishing on a charter boat will want to know if the boat has a restroom. Most large boats do, while smaller boats often do not. Know before you have to go!

Refunds and cancellations?

Be clear on the boat's refund policy before you pay. Find out how far in advance you have to cancel, and what happens if the trip is cancelled because of inclement weather. A few outfits won't refund your money, even when they cancel the trip. Instead, they'll re-schedule the trip. If you're
