Sea turtles, sting rays, and sharks, oh my! Home to over 700,000 gallons of aquariums, The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is the state's largest aquarium. With a commitment to increasing knowledge and appreciation for Virginia's marine environment and preserving its existence, it should be no surprise this is one of the best aquariums and live animal habitats in the country.

Arrive early and enjoy a day full of adventure. To make the most of your visit, you will want to visit both buildings. These buildings house 3 touch tanks, more than 300 hands-on exhibits, an outdoor aviary, 10 acres of marsh habitat, and a 1/3 mile nature trail connecting the two buildings. There is also a phenomenal 3-D IMAX Theater that should not be missed.

The Bay & Ocean Pavilion will introduce you to many aquatic animals and plants that are native to Virginia. Check out the Chesapeake Bay touch pool. There is a horseshoe crab and plenty of fishes from the Chesapeake Bay. If you like turtles, there are plenty of varieties to be seen in the Chesapeake Light Tower Aquarium. You won't even realize you are learning the science of oceanography with all the engaging hands-on exhibits. Ocean dwellers like stingrays and sharks can be found at the Norfolk Canyon Aquarium.

When you have seen it all at the Bay & Ocean Pavilion, take a stroll along the nature trail to the Marsh Pavilion. This is only a 10-minute walk and it will take you through a salt marsh and woodland preserve. Visiting during the summer months will guarantee running into the activity carts along the trail. These activity carts will teach you more about the animals and plants around Owls Creek. For a wonderful view of Owls Creek, climb to the top of the 30-foot observation tower.

Marsh dwellers, such as river otters, sea horses, and snakes can be found at the Marsh Pavilion. Once you have seen all the creatures inside the pavilion, head out to the aviary. The aviary is home to 55 different species of native birds.

After spending some time with the plants and animals at the aquarium, take in a show at the IMAX Theater. You can't help but have a great experience with a screen that reaches six stories high. Everything is so life-like and in 3-D, the images just jump off the screen at you.

The experience of the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is sure to leave you talking long after you have left. It is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. If you only have a short time to visit Virginia Beach, this stop should definitely make it to the top of your list.

The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is located at 717 General Booth Boulevard.
