Opinions vary about which health supplements are the most popular. You might think that antioxidant capsules or exotic berry juices are at the top of the list these days. The truth is that the top five health supplements are surprisingly simple. According to a national survey, here are the most popular supplements that families in the US are taking, and some of their benefits and risks.

Omega-3 - Omega-3 fatty acids have long been used to prevent and aid in the treatment of heart disease. They are prevalent in cold water fish. They help prevent the hardening of the arteries, heart attack, and hypertension. Omega-3 oils are good for mental well-being and can reduce the symptoms of depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and Alzheimer's disease. They are also beneficial for some skin ailments and joint pain. Most people take them in capsule form. Omega-3 supplements can interfere with blood clotting, so you should not take them if you are on blood thinners or before surgery. Look for a mercury free brand and it should be kept in the refrigerator so it stays fresh.

Glucosamine - This supplement is made from the shells of shrimp, crab, lobster, and other sea creatures. It is believed to help slow joint cartilage damage, especially of the knee. It can also help reduce pain and inflammation from arthritis. It comes in capsule or liquid form. It can cause gas or stool softening in some people and can aggravate diabetes. If you are allergic to shellfish you should not take glucosamine.

Echinacea - This herb is said to stimulate the body's immune system by activating red blood cells. It is widely taken for colds and flu, but it can also help a sore throat, or enlarged lymph glands. It has been used to treat urinary tract and yeast infections, and herpes. A lesser known use for echinacea is topically. It can help the healing of wounds, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin inflammations. You can take echinacea in capsule form, liquid, or tea. It should never be taken on an empty stomach. Some side effects, even when taken correctly, are an upset stomach, nausea, and dizziness. If you have ragweed or other plant allergies you may have an allergic reaction to it.

Flaxseed - Flaxseed oil is a good source of Omega-3, so it can reduce heart disease and help the cardiovascular system. It is high in fiber and helps prevent constipation, hemorrhoids, intestinal disorders, and gallstones. It can aid in preventing certain types of cancer, such as breast and prostate. Its anti-inflammatory characteristics make it useful in treating arthritis as well. Flaxseed promotes healthy hair, nails, skin, and eyes. It can be eaten as seeds, but is absorbed better by the body if it is ground. It also comes in capsule or liquid form. It should be taken with plenty of water and should not be taken at the same time as other oral medications because the high fiber content can prevent the absorption of the other medicines.

Ginseng - Ginseng root is used to treat many imbalances in the body. It can increase physical endurance, improve memory and concentration, boost energy, enhance sexual desire, reduce cholesterol, ease anxiety, and prevent cancer. It is thought to slow the aging process and has been used to treat Alzheimer's. It can also help people suffering from anemia, female problems, or metabolism disorders. It is taken in capsule form, as a tea, or chewed raw, if you can handle the bitter taste. Side effects could be agitation, diarrhea, headaches, mood swings, or trouble sleeping. You should talk to a doctor before you take ginseng if you have heart ailments, high blood pressure, blood sugar problems, or are taking any kind of blood thinner.
