'Surviving' a car ride with toddlers

Riding in the car with a toddler can be lots of fun, not frustrating. There are many different things that you can do to distract your child, but some of those things also distract you as well, so you have to be extra careful in doing so. I have found that if I am able to take someone along with me it's the best thing in the world, never go on a long trip without taking someone along to help you and keep you sane. Having one child is harder than having two; at least with more they can entertain each other.

~Music. Keep a couple tapes, CD's or download some songs on your IPod, whatever your fancy. But make sure you have lots of kid's songs, especially their favorites. A lot of kids will sing along and forget about everything else. Of course they will want you to sing along with them so make sure you know they words as well.

~Portable DVD player. Being able to watch their favorite movies while in the car will entertain your child for hours. Make a CD case full of their favorite DVD's to carry along whenever you will be in the car for a long period of time. Once the sun sets, your child is bound to fall asleep while watching her favorite movie.

~Toys. Keep a small backpack filled with toys that your child can play with while riding. It's always best to let your child choose her own toys so that they stay interested in what they are playing with. In a separate pocket of the backpack add snacks and drinks so that they are able to reach them as well when they are ready for them. No matter how old your child is, sippie cups may be the best as they will not spill when dropped.

~Games. You can play several road games with your child. Point out the big trucks that they would like, or pretty houses, trees or whatever your child might be interested in. When the kids are younger this trick doesn't work to well due to the child not being interested for very long. The more you involve your child without doing too much yourself, the better.

~Books. Though your child may not be able to read yet, they will still be entertained by looking at all the pictures in their favorite books and may read you their version of the story. Their version of the real story is always better than the real story. You are bound to have plenty of laughs once they start telling you their story.

Whatever you decide to do to entertain your child, make sure you stay safe and remember your child's safety as well.
