How to copy CDs into MP3s

by Tammy Clevenger

Created on: June 19, 2009

The MP3 file type is the standard lossy file type for audio, which means that the MP3 file is a compressed version of a larger music file, such as a waveform (WAV) file or a CD Audio (cda) file. MP3 files are compatible with nearly all handheld devices, computers and laptops. Converting CD music files to MP3 audio files is a very straightforward process with an audio conversion utility. Several freeware, shareware and trial versions of audio conversion utility programs are available for download. A trial version of NCH Software's Switch is used for this walk-through.

First, download and install an audio conversion utility program. To use Switch, visit the NCH Switch download site. Insert the CD to convert into the appropriate drive on the computer. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the CD drive to view the contents of the CD organized in a folder schema. Open the CD drive to view the files on the CD. The standard CD music file type is .cda. The files will most likely be named in sequential titles: Track01.cda, Track02.cda, etc. Track01.cda will coincide with the first song listed on the insert of the CD. Using the song list from the CD insert, each song will be renamed to the actual song title during the conversion process.

Open the audio file conversion utility program. Click 'Add Files' and navigate to the track files on the CD. Select all of the track files in the CD folder. The tracks will list on the audio conversion program interface, ready to be converted. Choose the folder on the computer that will receive the output. Click on the 'Browse' button and navigating to and specify the desired folder. Select the output file type (MP3) from the dropdown list.

Other file types may also be selected from the output file type dropdown menu, including MP3, M4B, M4P, Apple Lossless, MP3, WAV, AA, AAX, and AIFF. To convert to MP3 files, select '.mp3' from the dropdown menu in the lower left corner of the application window.

Select and highlight all of the track files. Click the 'Convert' button to begin the batch file conversion process. Click the 'Open Output Folder' button or open Windows Explorer and navigate to the output folder. Verify that the new .mp3 files have been converted and saved. The files will retain the sequential names, but now will have file extensions of .mp3 instead of cda.

Now, organize and name your files. In Windows Explorer, rename each file according to the corresponding song title on the CD insert. At this point, you should have complete list of mp3 files named according to song title in the output folder. Congratulations! You have just successfully 'ripped' the music from a CD into MP3 files!
