We usually create our best work when we write about things that are close to our heart. Our passion and knowledge should come through, infusing the article with vibrancy and credibility. There are, however, other skills that are essential to the mix and which can help you create consistently great articles, even when you are writing on topics you are less knowledgeable on. Let's consider what these skills are:
Pride in your writing:
Before you submit your article, you should ask yourself "is this my best work?" In other words, is what you've written the best that you could conceivably have produced? Will it enhance your reputation as a writer? If the answer to these questions is no, then are you happy to submit your article to the scrutiny of the world?
Writing for impact:
From a technical perspective, is your article tight and punchy? Successful writers are diligent editors and delete words that fail to add value. Short sentences are easier to read and more likely to make an impact. Readability is also enhanced by the presence of correct grammar, spelling and formatting. Discrepancies will be regarded as a sign of sloppiness or incompetence, deflecting from the valid points that you are seeking to present.
Using research to augment your article:
There are times when we have gaps in our knowledge but these can be filled by undertaking research. Always acknowledge your sources; your reader will gain confidence from the fact that you've taken the time to research the topic.
Know your audience:
Communication is a two-way process. You are transmitting a message which you hope your reader will successfully interpret and value. However, we all have different perspectives, attention spans, and levels of understanding and literacy. To give an example, a grief counsellor would never dream of presenting the same information in the same way to a group of kids as they would to a group of adults. Where possible, therefore, a writer should be aware of who his or her audience is and tailor their writing style accordingly.
Editing built into the writing process:
Do you always go back and edit an article before submitting it? If the answer is no, then there's a high probability that you do not consistently produce your best work. What you have produced may contain much that is good but it's a bit like a gem that has yet to be polished for that final shiny finish. Editing is perceived as the boring part of the writing process but the best writers are ones who have recognised its importance.
Summary:
Write with passion and knowledge. Always take pride in your writing and hone it for maximum impact. Use research where it will augment the points that you are making and ensure that you tailor the content to your audience. Review and edit your work before putting it live. After all, your writing represents your brand as a writer. Finally, and above all, have fun. If you enjoy your writing, then this will shine through and help your work to be appreciated.
