With parrots, sometimes you never really know what is going on in their little bird brains. To try and understand the reasoning behind a parrots bite is to care enough to take the time to get to know your bird and the meaning of the body language of their parrot. If your parrot is pinning its eyes (flickering) and fanning its tail and bobbing his bushy flat head, this tells us that he is excited and that you should stay away. Birds do become territorial over their spots, just like the wild birds are too. For example if his cage is in the corner of your room and he comes out to play on the top of his cage with his toys and you decide to go over to the cage and he starts his aggression while leaning over to you with the other body language listed above, he is only protecting and guarding what is his. If you begin to speak in a calm slow way while looking at him shyly off and on, slowly bat your eyes once in awhile, he should start to calm down. Do not stare at him as staring is a sign of aggression or yell at him. Treating aggression with aggression with birds never wins, because they can get just as fiery as challenged; especially amazons. A soothing conversation will show him that you mean no harm, but to simply talk. Be patient, it takes time.
If you must reach in their cage while he is there and he wants to bite you, distract him with an object in your other hand, while you retrieve the dish or toy.
Leave them alone when they are playing, eating or bathing. They are happy and most of the time do not wish to be disturbed. If you go up to your bird while he is eating, he could very easily become agitated and nip you.
Birds will bite if they become bored. They become depressed and sad just like we do. If you bought your bird home and he was a novelty for a few months and suddenly you don't spend the time with him like you once did, he will become depressed and miss those times. If he doesn't have you anymore, he could become angry when you do decide to come around and nip.
Any sudden movement will cause your bird to bite because he sees it as a threat. This is one reason why young children terrify them and should always be controlled when around the birds. They should not be allowed to scream, run or put their fingers in the cages, because the birds will bite them, out of fear and it won't be their fault. These are exotic birds we are talking about and they still have the attributes of their ancestors. They also know they are prey birds and are always on
