If you are a Michigan resident who is short on cash, or on a budget for whatever reason, don't feel as though your summer is ruined! you still have quite a few things to do, and the best part is they wont cost you much, if anything, other than the money you spend on gas.
One such thing is visiting Michigan's Upper Penninsula, specifically the Mackinaw Bridge. As lovely as it is Mackinac Island is definitely very pricey, even for a single person, however browsing through Mackinaw City and St. Ignace can be fun and educational for nowhere near the price.
You shouldn't skip the many souvenir shops up there either. The first one you will come across is the Seashell World Shop, you will see signs posted for it wall ahead of time.
One place you don't want to visit late in the day is the Colonial Michilimackinac. This fort, from the early 1700's, has a lot to offer. From all of the exibits to the educational (but in no way boring) tours. They also offer demonstrations, such as canon firing, musket firing, the wedding performance and more. Mind you all of these are done in costume and when you wonder throughout the fort you will stumble upon quite a few of its residents. All of them will be more than happy to indulge any of the questions you might have.
Once you are satisfied with the Colonial Michilimackinac experience take a peek into the group of small souvenir shops which are right outside of the fort. Don't forget to grab some of that fantastic fudge before you set out to cross the Mackinaw Bridge. This in itself is an experience.
Over the bridge you will find the small town of St. Ignace. Leave your vehicle in one of the parking lots and take a relaxing stroll through the streets of the city. All over the side walk you will find maps posted with the local attractions (most of which are free). Some you shouldn't pass up are the Fort De Buade Museum (free), the Museum of Ojibwa Culture (free) and a smaller Native American museum and souvenir shop right across from the Museum of Ojibwa Culture. A little ways from the center of the town (Exit #348 off I-75), you will find the curious Castle Rock which rises 200 feet and on the bottom of which is a huge statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe, his blue ox. Along with them there is a Souvenir Barn, here you enter and pay 50 cents for a pass through to climb up the Castle Rock. Once done at the counter you will get a small sticker announcing that you have climbed Castle Rock.
These are just some of the attractions this area has to offer so dont have a list and dont have a plan, explore, stop where seems interesting, and pass what doesnt. Most importantly relax, and enjoy your trip!
