Computer security is essential to any person who owns a computer. Whether you have Internet or not, computer security is important, but even more important if you do have Internet. If you do not have Internet, then you don't really have to worry about getting viruses or having someone steal your identity through key loggers and the like. But you can still worry about people logging into your computer when you aren't around. If one of your children's friend were to look over your shoulder while you logged in and got your password, they could wreak havoc on your computer.
If you do have internet access, there are a few things that you must have; a good anti-virus program, anti-spyware program, firewall, and complex and varietal passwords. Good anti-virus programs are everywhere. Many are free for anyone to use. Others you can pay for and get many more features. I personally just have one of the many free versions. Some of the better free anti-virus programs out there include; Avast and AVG. I have used both and was very pleased with both. I have never had any problems with either. Now just having an anti-virus program isn't enough. You need to keep them up to date and regularly scan your computer for viruses. Especially if you regularly download things.
Anti-spyware programs are just as plentiful as anti-virus programs. A few of the more prominent ones include AdAware and Spybot Search And Destroy. I have never used AdAware, but have heard and seen great reviews on it. I have, however, used Spybot and have never had any spyware get through it. As with anti-virus programs, just having one isn't enough. You need to keep them up to date and regularly run scans. I run my scans of both anti-virus and spyware every couple of days. They usually don't find anything, but its not worth your computer getting sabotaged.
A firewall is a great addition to have. Windows has a firewall built into the operating system, but isn't one of the most top notch items. There are plenty of other free or payable firewall programs out there. In my own computer use, I find that the windows firewall is adequate for my needs. But you might want to protect valuable information.
Complex and varietal passwords are essential to any computer, and any account that you own. Never have the same passwords for multiple things. If someone were to steal one password, you don't want them to be able to access everything. Changing your passwords regularly is another great pre-caution to have.
