Is addiction to alcohol or drugs a disease? It all depends on how an individual defines the word disease. A disease can be thought of a condition that is detrimental to the health, livelihood and well being of a human being and or another living organic thing. A disease on this premise would impede normal growth, eliminate an organisms mode of defending itself against an invasion that is of an involuntary nature. Therefore this condition (Disease) can be thought of as being acquired through no fault of the victims own actions. A person can acquire cancer through unhealthy living and poor nutrition but cancer is not a desired result from the deliberate lack of proper nutrition and prudent living circumstances a person subjects themselves to on a daily basis.
Although the outcome of a form of entertainment/recreation and seeking pleasure from a variety of different modes can be negative; The input of such behavior traits as eating compulsively and or the ability to want to seek pleasure from inducing intoxicating substances into the body to stifle the negativity of everyday life to make it more comfortable and or tolerable; should not be thought of as a situation like a disease were the symptoms and detrimental effects of this condition flourish through no more attributions or contributions of the alleged infected body.
If one is to consider alcohol or drugs a disease based on the sole fact that the initial existing characteristics of a body must be adjusted down or to coincide with the invasion. Thus the deteriorating health and good spirit; a result of this and or want or need to desire pleasure is solidly negative.
Then one must assume that life in general, as in living day to day is also considered a disease by itself. For everyday that passes you are one step closer to death. So on this premise if alcohol and addiction is a disease, life itself is a disease.
Addiction is a state of mind. The physical need to require something is not the same as the mental need to satisfy or satiate a persons wants and or desires. Alcohol and drugs actual alter a person's chemistry in their body but this all depends on the individuals self control and ability to differentiate from mild satiation or excess. Excess in any form is never good. Anything in unregulated intervals and inconsistent durations can be considered detrimental to the livelihood and well being of an individual. This is were you can draw the line between good and bad where excess can be considered
