How to find your own personal style

We all have been there where we have spent a "small fortune" on decorating our homes. After completion, we then realize that perhaps, the color paint or a piece of furniture is not our style. The main reason why this occurs is that, before this exercise is attempted, we did not truly think about our likes and dislikes. We might have seen an attractive display in a showroom or ad in a magazine and thought maybe we could replicate the same look at home.

Therefore, when decorating our homes, it is imperative that a sense of individuality be our guide. Remember that it is your home and your own personal style is paramount, not your friend's or a layout in a magazine. A color scheme in your neighbor's home might not go well with your type of furniture. Your home is a special place where you desire your family members and friends to gather and feel welcome. They want to feel your personaility and warmth.

The question of how to find your own personal style might be a little tricky. However, it is not difficult to ascertain. A revisit to your childhood years or a favorite vacation spot can suprisingly remind you of your style/taste. Do think about your favorite food,it might be Italian. Decorating your kitchen in an Italian theme in mind would bring you joy. A glimpse inside your clothes closet may perhaps reveal your color scheme for your Den/Living room.

Do express your self through your cultural heritage. If you are of African decent, incorporate a few pieces of African arts and crafts on your wall leading to the staircase or in the foyer. If you were born in California or a Caribbean Island, the beach may mean a lot to you. You could bring that home by recreating a guest room with pictures of palm trees or select a bed comforter with bright prints of sand/shells. Bring freshness within by painting the room with a coat of blue that reminds you of the ocean.

If you love antiques, infuse character and personality in a room by purchasing a couple pieces of antiques. A room with classic and contemporary pieces will provide an interesting and attractive look. Antiques can be found at your local Flea Market and they are quite budget-friendly.

The spa is a very comforting and relaxing place some of us like to go and unwind for a couple of hours. However, with the declining economy we have to place it on hold sometimes. One way to regain that experience is to transform your bathroom into a spa-like atmosphere. Get a basket or use even a shelf, roll and place white towels of different sizes in a corner. A white bath robe with slippers are excellent choices. Purchase some white candles of varied sizes around the tub and add some bath oils and soaps in a tray. Invest in a couple of relaxing CD's of your choice and a few magazines. And , you are all set. The ambience will be warm and relaxing.

Express yourself through your pasttime. If you are an avid reader, create your very own library. This could perhaps be a focal point in a section of the living room. Target or Walmart stock a variety of book shelves. You could make it your own by repainting it in an eye-catching color. Inexpensive books can be purchased on the Internet and Flea Markets. Do not forget to collect little whimsical book-ends and other accessories to place in between your books.

With the incorporation of a little imagination/creativity, a sense of individuality and sometimes revisting your past and present pleasures, one can find their own Personal Style. We all have it within.
