Things you need for your first baby

dresser of good height. Both provide storage as well. You will need diapers (either disposable or cloth), wipes (either disposable or cloth), and a place to put the dirty diapers (diaper pail or trash can- a regular trash can works just fine). Finally it is a good idea to arm your changing area with a few good supplies. One is a diaper rash treatment option. Baby powder that is corn starch based (talc is dangerous) is a great way to go. Desitin Creamy is also a good diaper rash ointment if you desire to use an ointment. Rubbing alcohol and Q-tips are great to have right there to treat the umbilical cord until it falls off.

Clothing.

Clothing tends to be something most of us love to buy and find ourselves buying too much. However, if you are looking at what is necessary and what you absolutely need then the answer is a lot less then what we love to buy. You will want 5 or more shirts or onesies. If your baby is born during cold weather you will also want pants, sweaters or long sleeve shirts, and a newborn hat to keep him or her warm. If the weather is warm or hot and you aren't keeping the air conditioner on really cold then the shirts or onesies and a blanket are sufficient. You will also need a large package of socks. For sleeping in you will want a few sleep and play outfits or a few sleeping gowns (gowns make night time changes easier). Any cute outfits or dresses are optional (and of course make dressing them fun). However, the basics can be just that, basic.

Travel.

A car seat is a must, and should be one of the first things considered. However, you will also want a diaper bag, a travel case of wipes, and possibly even a folding changing pad. These things can make diapering easier on the go. You may also want to consider a stroller if you will be walking places and or a carrier which can be used both on the go and around the house.

Figuring out what things you have to have verses what things people recommend isn't often easy. You can use these suggestions and explanations to make the decisions yourself. Take a piece of paper and go through each section and determine what you will need based on your choices, lifestyle, and the ease of use.
