We've got to hurry! This way shouted Alderic as another boulder came crashing down the rock face. Aeronwen screamed, the wild Hafwyn beast was right behind them, she could almost feel its stinking breath on the back of her neck making her shudder. They had dared enter its domain and now it was angry beyond belief. Cedric, Alderic's white owl screeched just in front of her, beseeching her to run but the cave was exploding around them with chunks of rock flying through the air with amazing speed. Aeronwen ducked and weaved her way as she fought to keep up with Alderic. Myfanwy, her warrior beast was lagging behind with a wound to his shoulder but he valiantly tried to catch the beast that was almost on top of Aeronwen. Thoughts of her grandmother Nemetona raced through Aeronwen's mind and she screamed her name just before she felt the ground give way beneath her feet. As she plummeted down into the bottomless pit of the Cave of Secrets, images flashed before her of a life not her own. Her bag was ripped from her body as she fell deep into the black hole and the book that held the many secrets they had been searching for was flung from the bag to float as if guided by an unknown force, and came to rest on a ledge part way down.
Grandmother! Please.. help us! she screamed as the blackness threatened to engulf her, her arms flailing in a desperate attempt to catch hold of something before she met her final death.
Alderic jumped over the falling rocks and ducked just in time as a huge boulder came hurtling from above to come crashing down onto the path. He stopped and turned to yell for Aeronwen to watch out but as he looked behind to see where she was, he saw the gaping hole beyond the rock that now blocked the path. As he climbed above the debris, he caught sight of the beast as it too fell into the black pit following Aeronwen.
Aeronwen! No!
Annie, Annie, wake up, you're dreaming
Annie opened her eyes to see her husband, Alfred sitting up beside her in their bed with a look of deep concern on his face.
Was it the same dream again? he asked.
Annie nodded. She had been having a reoccurring dream of falling. Though she knew it wasn't her falling, it felt incredibly real, so much so that it shook her to her soul causing her to let out a gut wrenching scream.
Alfred was worried for his wife but she never talked about the dreams and she brushed aside his concern. The scream was the worst. It was very real and he didn't know what to do to help her.
