Chocolate Pound Cake
Try this delicious chocolate pound cake with chocolate icing which contains a secret ingredient that gives it a delicious flavor and aroma. This cake recipe has come down from generations and still remains popular among the family for its moist and light texture. Try it out, and the chances are that you will be trying this again and again.
Ingredients:
2 Cups Flour
Cup Butter or Margarine
3 Cups Sugar
5 Eggs
Cup Cocoa Powder
Cup Milk
Teaspoon Baking Powder
Teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda (also known as Baking Soda)
2 Teaspoon Vanilla Essence or Extract
How to make it:
1. Take the flour, add the baking powder, cocoa powder and the bicarbonate of soda to it and sieve the mixture three times. This is a very important step because it will make the cake light. Bicarbonate of soda is used to make the texture of the chocolate cake light and also to give it a dark chocolate brown color.
2. Separate the egg yolks from the whites. This can be done by gently hitting the egg on the pointed side and when it cracks slightly and gently make an opening that is big enough to pour out the white of the egg. Then beat the egg white well with a beater until light and fluffy.
3. In a clean bowl beat the butter and sugar well then one by one add the yolks of the egg while continuing to beat the butter and sugar.
4. Gradually add a spoon of flour, egg white and milk alternatively to the mixture while beating. Do this until you finish all of the flour, egg white and milk.
5. Finally add the vanilla essence or extract.
6. Grease and line a baking tray and pour in the mixture.
7. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and when it reaches this temperature put the cake in. Baking time will be around 1 Hour but will vary depending on the tray. It is best to check the mixture after thirty minutes.
Note:
To check if a cake is baked enough gently immerse a clean dry knife into the middle and if it comes out nice and dry it is done or when the sides of the cake have come away from the tin slightly which too means the cake is baked enough. Turn out the cake on to a wire rack to cool.
This cake is ideal for tea time or is an ideal birthday cake which can be covered with the following chocolate icing.
In a bowl beat together icing sugar with butter or margarine add cocoa powder and beat well. For a delicious secret flavor to the icing add a very small pinch of well ground nutmeg and cinnamon.
