Several years ago, I was at a baby shower when a young girl was asked the mother to be if she could wait until the baby was born. The mother to be responded that should would be willing to wait forever; the thought of pain was not that appealing to her. At that time I looked at her to inform her that it was impossible, the baby got in there, and the baby has to come out. I truly believe that the future mother to be knew that, but I am also sure that many young girls like the idea of having a baby. They do not think about the pain before hand, only after the choice has been made.
Then one day while I was visiting some of my Amish relatives I decided to ask about how they managed to have so many children. I remembered one cousin of my husband's had 18 children. I just could not imagine that many children and the labor of each one. There had to be something that they knew and we did not know. I was interested in learning.
It was at this time that the ladies started talking about all the things that they do to prepare for childbirth. They all came to the agreement some things that they all had income as they prepared for their pregnancy. The ladies told how they hardly felt the child birth and believed it was because of these six main things.
1.) Always make sure to take the prenatal vitamins that the doctor orders. Plus they visit a vitamin store and ask for their advice. There is a vitamin that they have available to help ease the labor. Also be sure to take extra calcium. The more calcium the less pain, is what one Amish lady claimed.
2.) These Amish ladies all know how to work and do not stop working during pregnancy. They also take a walk every night before bed or ride bike for half hour to an hour.
(That is on top of what they do during their day)
3.) When it gets closer to having the child, they go to the Chiropractor. They want to make sure their hips are in line to help with labor pain.
4.) Always on first child, they take Lamaze Classes. This helps to learn to breathe correctly so you can work with contractions. This will also help to lower the chance of having an unnecessary surgery.
5.) They walk and walk during the onset of Labor. When the pain starts to get closer, they go to the hospital. After the arrival at the hospital and once the nurse is done checking them in, they walk and they walk, till they think they feel there are about to crawl, then they walk some more and most will walk to the point of delivery. The more you walk the faster the child will be born. The more you lay in the hospital bed waiting on the arrival of the baby will take a lot longer than if you keep asking the nurse to let you walk. I do want to admit that some nurse like to have their patience in bed as soon as possible. This is not going to help your body progress. Sometimes you have to really stress to the nurse that you wish to walk as much as possible.
6.) The newest thing in the labor process is to use the Ball or the Bath Tub if available. Some of the Amish ladies have been using it but this is the younger generation. They say a mixture of walking and bouncing. In our area the Bath Tub delivery has only been done at the hospital one time.
These things are very important to help with the labor and delivery. If you ask a prenatal doctor, if some of the surgeries could have been avoided if the mother had understood how to work with the contractions, you will learn that this is in fact very true. Make sure if you're pregnant to do your part to have a happy healthy pregnancy. Take Lamaze classes and your doctor might let the father cut the umbilical cord.
