Short stories: For children

by Sarah Harris

Mary the fairy gets a new job

Let me introduce to you a good friend of mine, Mary the fairy.

Now May the fairy is a bedtime fairy. It is her job to send all the children to sleep. The problem is Mary the fairy does not like her job. She is supposed to sprinkle magic sleeping dust on the heads of children to help them fall asleep.

Instead she would cause a bit of mischief, so that the little boy or girl would not go to sleep.

And just because only children can see her and grown ups cant. She can be as naughty as she likes. Her most favourite trick is to pick up the teddy of the little girl or boy, and fly about with it. The little girl or boy would then chase her and their teddy, running around in their bedroom instead of being in bed.

However, as soon as a grown up came into the room to see what all the commotion is about. Mary the fairy would drop the teddy, and as grown ups could not see Mary the fairy, they would tell the child off as they thought they where being naughty.

The best bedtime fairies would have medals at the end of the month for the most children sent to sleep soundly. Mary the fairy had never received a medal, and she did not care about that.

One fine day the Queen fairy's secretary phoned Mary the fairy at her home.

Mary the fairy, the Queen wishes to see straight away.

I'll be right over. Replied Mary the fairy, wondering what was going on.

Mary the fairy washed her face, brushed her hair and dusted her wings. Then off she flew to the fairy palace. When she arrived, she was taken into the Queen's reception room.

The room was a lovely white colour, with pink marble floor and gold chandeliers, and little pedestals with vases on top, each vase contained a different colour flowers.

Mary the fairy sat on a chair opposite the Queens table. When the Queen entered the room, Mary the fairy stood up and bowed respectfully.

Mary the fairy is everything going okay at work? the Queen asked her, knowing that Mary the fairy did not like her job.

To be honest your majesty, I am not enjoying my job. I don't like working nights as I miss waking up as the sun rises in the morning. Mary the fairy explained to the Queen.

Well what would you like to do instead then? Asked the Queen.

"Well i do like...." started Mary the fairy.

"Mischief and mayhem" Interrupted the Queen. "Although i think i know exactly the right job for you" The queen finished.

Mary the fairy was wondering what job the queen was thinking of.

"Th right job for you is a dolls house fairy. The main part of the job is to move the furniture and dolls about in the house." The queen announced practically jumping from her chair.

After sorting out the details with the appropriate fairy division, Mary left to go home.

On her first day at her new job, she had to report to the dolls house fairies leader. His name was Wonham. He gave Mary the fairy a map and a list of what to do.

On the list was:

1. Switch on any lights

2. Put all dolls to bed (If in bed already, get them changed and sitting at the dinner table for breakfast.)

3. Run the bath

4. Wipe away any foot prints left by yourself.

When she got home. She got her outfit ready for the next day. Had a little something to eat and drink. And then went to bed early as to make sure she was refreshed for her first proper day as the new dolls house fairy.
