How to cope with new mommy boredom

After the overwhelming start to parenthood of labour, birth and hospital papers, it's hard to place the feeling that may settle in after a month or two at home with a little one. It isn't a feeling a new Mom wants to admit, but new Mom boredom is quite common feeling among women who are used to the hectic pace of modern life. Most of us go from the busyness of high school to the excitement of college or university to the challenge of a new job before we start motherhood. We get used to having colleagues and coworkers around when all of a sudden we are home alone with a baby day in and day out. Of course, there are those women who love every minute of babyhood and it may seem that you are the only one who has ever felt bored of the monotony of feeding, changing, playing, cleaning and rocking, but look a bit harder and you'll find other mommies looking for a it of a break in the routine.

When seeking ways to curb new mom boredom, think about what you enjoyed doing before baby was born. In most cases, you can continue doing what you loved to do before baby, with a few easy modifications. Here are some suggestions:

1. Walking or running. Once you get the okay from your doctor, it is relatively easy to bring baby along for some moderate, healthy exercise. Buy or borrow a good running stroller for the occasion. Make sure you do not jog using a baby wrap, Snugli or other carrier attached to the body as the jostling is very dangerous to a baby's delicate neck and head. Make the walk or run even more enjoyable by inviting a friend or joining a Mommy walking group. Loneliness is another common new mom feeling.

2. Watch a movie. Many theatres now have special movie showings for mothers. Bring along a bottle or a feeding blanket so you can be ready to feed your baby whenever she gets hungry and don't forget the diapers. Again, look for another new mom to invite along.

3. Join a baby group. I am convinced that all the new baby sign language, music, swimming and playgroups are more beneficial for the parents involved than the babies. Take advantage of one to meet other new moms and dads. The bonus is that you will learn what other parents are doing to overcome colic, night wakings, and boredom. Plus, you'll get some much needed socializing and a network of friends for your child when he gets older.

4. Go on a date. Now that your baby is a little older, it's a great time to reconnect with your partner. Take advantage of any offers by trusted family and friends to leave your little one for an hour or two so you can go for dinner or coffee. If you are nursing, plan your outing around your baby's feeding schedule or pump a bottle or two to leave behind. Bring along a cell phone so you can be reached if necessary.

Having a new baby can make you feel like you have lost your old life and friends. Things have certainly changed, but it is a great opportunity to make new friends and discover new interests. Enjoy your time with your little one, you'll be surprised how quickly it goes.
