Some of the main storylines of the 2008-2009 NBA season:
All (or none) of the King's Men-It has started to become an annual tradition in Cleveland that a new prized free agent joins LeBron James' supporting cast and the King proclaims that he has his best supporting cast yet now that the team has the missing piece of the puzzle. This year, the addition was Mo Williams, a solid floor general who had steadily built up his stats on a perennially lottery bound team, the Milwaukee Bucks. With Williams as an ample partner in crime, the Cavs dominated the season. Against the Magic in the playoffs, however, it become apparent against the imposing front court of the Magic just how much the Cavs' frontcourt was past their prime. Similarly, Delonte West and Wally Sczerbiak didn't add up to much at the 2-spot despite showing promise with the organization on last year's playoff run.
A Tale of Two Supermen - Shaq halted his downward slide towards obsolescence by putting up impressive enough numbers with the Suns to earn a berth to the NBA All-Star game (where he won co-MVP) and make third-team all-NBA. Then of course, there's the newer superman, Dwight Howard. He donned a cape in the 2008 slam dunk contest and amazed the crowd with his winning performance, but it was this season that Howard became a bona fide star. His 40-point performance in Game 6 that led the Magic to a monumental upset over the Cavs marked Howard's ascension into the elite tier of the league.
Mile-High City soars a Couple Rounds Higher- The swap of a one-time MVP for a solid guard that had never distinguished himself as the bona fide star of his team, proved to be a winning formula for the Nuggets. The team had been stagnating at the level of first-round exits for five straight years, but with the acquisition of Billups, the team became a legitimate title contender and gave L.A. a run for their money. Denver's success was also the result of the growth of young guns Dahntay Jones and J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin returning to his best and healthiest seasons since his 2004 acquisition, the return to the league of defensive stalwart Chris "Birdman" Anderson, and of course, Carmelo.
Exile in the California Triangle-The L.A. Clippers were the talk of the town when they made the playoffs in 2006 and advanced one round for their cross-town counterparts and similarly, the Golden State Warriors were the success story of 2007 when they pulled off one of NBA history's greatest upsets against Dallas.
